Northern Counties Chihuahua Club

We were very sorry to hear of the death of our President Mrs Olga Frei-Denver, aged 94.

Our Chairman Pat Valentine writes: I was very sorry to hear of the death of our Patron, President and Founder Member of the NCCC, Olga Frei-Denver, who sadly passed away on the 6th February 2024. It was an honour and a privilege to have known “our little Olga”. Olga was the matriarch of the Chihuahua world. She always had a deep love of the chihuahuas. Olga was such a character, always laughing and smiling. She was bubbling with personality and an extremely knowledgable lady, who was never afraid to say what she thought and to speak her mind. Olga, rest in peace and thank you for all your friendship, love and guidance. Sincere condolences to your family, Carl, Becky and Beau.

Olga was a lady of many talents and tributes have been paid to her throughout the world. Those of you who sadly never met her, you may enjoy browsing through some of her life story.

Her son Carl wrote this on her 94th birthday;

She introduced the first ever Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican hairless) dogs at Crufts 1959.  Mum and Lady Margaret Drummond Hay had been exploring Mexico looking for breeds of Chihuahuas and came across the Xolos. Using her husband’s diplomatic status they smuggled a pair of the dogs into the States and shipped them over to England. As the first ever such breed of dog to enter the UK they were kept at London Zoo for quarantine. Mum had a Chihuahua show of performing dogs in the US and later in the UK. Apparently mum had her performing dogs on the grounds of the White House during Eisenhower’s Presidency that resulted in a newspaper article saying “Mexicans invade White House Lawn!” though I can’t find anything about it online. My parents were on the big venue stages in the US, Cuba and the UK with their Hal Denver knife throwing act so they got to hang out with some big names and cool people including Che Guevara at the Sans Souci although they didn’t realise it was him at the time apparently. Mum used to hang out with Marilyn Monroe, also a fan of Chihuahuas and had to sit in for her on one of the films where they just needed the back of her head as Marilyn was absent for some reason. Mum bred Champion Chihuahuas in UK (under the stable name of Pequeno) and became a top judge of the breed. Her last judging appointment was at the Millennium Crufts Show 2000. Mum is founder member and Honorary Life President of the Longcoat Chihuahua Club of GB and President of Northern Counties Chihuahua Club
